Previously known as Columbia City Ballet, South Carolina Ballet has been recently expanded and rebranded to its current name. This move aligns with honoring the ballet's legacy and the expansion and growth it poses in the years to come. In its over six decades of performing ballet shows in South Carolina and touring across the United States, the ballet has performed to over 50 thousand patrons each season. The company usually presents four to five full-length ballet productions every season and occasionally tours to Florida, Georgia, and Washington, DC.

In their 2023-2024 season, South Carolina Ballet has continued to perform a mix of traditional and modern ballets. William Starrett, the ballet company's director, takes pride in this diverse show as it aligns with their IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access) Mission. Aside from their annual Nutcracker Ballet during the holiday season, South Carolina Ballet also performed "Dracula: Ballet with a Bite." They will also perform "Snow White," "Elvis Ballet," and "Body & Movement Explored" in the coming months.

In all of these upcoming shows, one special show will be back due to the public demand: "Motown Ballet." The company's Motown Ballet, which debuted two years ago and celebrated the specialized soul music that Motown Records delivered to radios in the 1960s, will be returning this February and March.

"I wanted to bring it back because it was so popular and Motown, I just love that music and the celebration of that music and how it's so traditionally American," Starrett said in an interview.

In this thrilling ballet performance, South Carolina Ballet pays tribute to Motown music while promoting diversity, inclusion, and harmony. It showcases the rise of the record label to the position of the most commercially successful and culturally significant label of the 1960s, Motown, and features many of the label's most beloved and widespread singles. Ballet, jazz, and modern dance are just a few of the styles showcased in this program that draws from the works of over a dozen choreographers.
