The Thorn is a contemporary take on the Passion Play, a centuries-old tradition. By the 14th century, the Passion was being performed in Vienna. By 1514, Tyrol (an Austrian region) was presenting a seven-day Passion performance. Since 1634, the most famous Passion play in Oberammergau, Bavaria, has been held once every decade or so. These plays are all named after the Latin verb patior, which means “to suffer.” And, while that story has been told numerous times over the previous 2,000 years or more, humans have always found a place for a new perspective, a new way of thinking. With that being said, The Thorn was born.
According to The Thorn’s website, it is a “visually dynamic and heart-stirring theatrical portrayal of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.”
John Bolin, the youth pastor at New Life Church in Colorado Springs, created the simple play as an illustrated sermon for his adolescent group. He reported that the first-ever performance – which was simply done with a few actors and light makeup – was indeed a success, with over 10,000 attendees in the first year. In the years afterward, The Thorn has traveled the country, depending on a cast of professional dancers, actors, and acrobats, as well as thousands of volunteers.
The Thorn is back this year on a North American tour to perform emotionally powerful performances that will have your hearts skipping beats. The performance has kept its name as one of the most engaging takes on the Passion of Christ, as its modern approach has appealed to society. It offers an immersive experience that engrosses the audience in a wondrous experience like never before.
“Imagine the drama of Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ colliding with the elegance of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake,” Kathy Schiffer from the National Catholic Register said.
The Thorn is making its way to the Johnny Mercer Theatre on Friday, the 13th of October, 2023, for an unforgettable performance. This is your chance to partake in this spiritual and religious experience as you grow to understand the life of Jesus Christ. The show is suitable for all ages, but due to a scene in the second act, viewers are recommended to be at least 12 years and older.
